CHAPTER ELEVEN

Grace zipped up her suitcase and set it back in the corner even as she tried not to obsess over where Ren was. She’d woken up alone half an hour ago and…couldn’t believe that he’d just left. Not without a note or something.

She looked at her phone—still no service—and saw that she needed to leave in a few minutes. She was dressed and had everything she needed. Except Ren.

When the door jangled and the lock slid open, she paused, relief hitting her hard as Ren stepped inside, two thermoses in his hands.

“Morning, sunshine.” The low timbre of his voice this morning did all sorts of things to her insides.

She’d been wondering how this morning would be after last night—oh my God, after she’d sat on his face. That had been such an amazing experience and she wanted to do it again as soon as possible. But she’d been feeling off-kilter since, wondering if things would be weird between them. “Morning yourself,” she murmured, crossing the room as he came toward her.

He took away all worry as he claimed her mouth, sweet and sensually, before he pulled back with a groan. “I’d meant to be back quicker,” he said, handing her one of the thermoses. “I got you hot coffee with actual flavored creamer. The kind you like.”

“Creamer?” She hadn’t seen that luxury anywhere in ages.

“A human family has a dairy farm and supplies the area.”

“You just became my new favorite person.”

“I wasn’t already your favorite person?” His mouth kicked up at the corners as he took a sip of his own coffee.

“After last night you definitely are.” She took a sip of her own drink, sighed in appreciation.

He snorted out a laugh. “And after last night I really hate that we’re not working together today.”

“What are you doing today anyway?” she asked as he held out a small cloth bag for her.

“There are a couple nutrient-dense nut bars in there for breakfast and even lunch if you need,” he said. “And to answer your question, I’m heading out to the far reaches of the perimeter with Griff and a couple other shifters.”

She hated the thought of him out there, unable to be contacted. She knew he was skilled and deadly, had seen it firsthand, but she was still going to worry. “Thank you, that’s really thoughtful.”

He just watched her for a long moment, his dark eyes hungry. For her. “I really wish we could just stay inside all day.”

“Me too.” She went up on tiptoe, kissed him again before pulling back. Then she tucked the bars into her backpack and slid it on her back. While she wanted to ask him what the future held for them, it felt too soon. And besides, if she didn’t like the answer, she didn’t want to know before heading off to work. “But we’re here for a job.”

Sighing, he headed toward the door. “I wish my job was making you climax all day,” he murmured as he opened the door.

Aaaand they found themselves face-to-face with their neighbor across the hall.
